Abhyanga is an ancient Ayurvedic practice where you lovingly anoint your body with warm oil, massaging from head to toe in slow, in intentional strokes. This has been my practice for over 15 years and its been a game changer in my skin tone, nourishing my sensitive nervous system, lymphatic drainage and sleep quality as my body has changed through the years.
Far from being just a beauty ritual, Abhyanga is a form of medicine. It calms the nervous system, grounds your energy, and prepares the body to surrender into deep, restorative sleep.
The Science of Touch & Sleep
Modern research now confirms what Ayurveda has known for thousands of years:
- Touch reduces cortisol (the stress hormone) and increases oxytocin, the hormone of love and calm.
- Massage lowers heart rate and blood pressure, priming your body for rest.
- Warm oil signals safety to the nervous system, letting your body shift from “fight or flight” into “rest and digest.”
- It also helps increase immunity especially keeping it strong through the change of the seasons
This is why Abhyanga isn’t pampering to me—it’s profound nervous system healing.
Best Oils for Nighttime Abhyanga
- Sesame oil: Warming, grounding, perfect for calming a restless Vata mind.
- Coconut oil: Cooling and soothing, especially for fiery Pitta types.
- Infused oils: rose, lavender, jasmine
Warm the oil and apply in soothing, calking strokes for evening to connect with your body lovingly
