I’ve always admired the simplicity of a sacred bedroom. I remember learning about monks’ rooms — just a bed, a desk, nothing extra. I thought it was beautiful. I also remember hearing about Mother Teresa’s bedroom: her writing desk, her bed, a space lived in with humility and devotion. That has always touched me — the idea that your bedroom could be pared down to just what you need, yet still hold such profound meaning.
That memory has stayed with me, and it influences the way I think about my own Sleep Sanctuary. At the heart of it all is simplicity — creating a space that invites peace. Uncluttered. The essentials so sleep is the priority. I found beauty in that simplicity.
I also have the luxurious part of me. And I’ve come to see that luxury, too, can be sacred. To wrap yourself in beauty, in softness, in fabrics that feel like heaven on your skin — that is also devotion. It’s honoring your body, your soul and sleep.
So my sanctuary is both: the monk-like simplicity and the goddess-like luxury.
Every night begins with one simple act: slipping into my bamboo nightie. I’ve worn the same style for over twenty years (of course new ones) now I just text the gal in LA and she sends them to me. It’s soft, breathable, and is nature’s silk.
This is where my luxurious side comes in. I may carry the simplicity of monks and Mother Teresa in my heart, but I also love my high thread count cotton sateen sheets. After a long day slipping into them is the ultimate. My down comforter is light yet warm and airy yet grounding.
The vagus nerve spray to mist my sheets when I have the urge to is on my nightstand, a bottle of frankincense and clary sage essential oils and a few books on my nightstand.
So that’s my little sneak peek of the heart of my sanctuary.
